Billionaire Mathematician

There is an interesting thread of comments going on concerning the value of speculators to society and the value of money to intellectually-minded people. It is interesting because the commentators debating the issue are mathematicians and physicists. The post that started the debate is about Jim Simons, "perhaps the most successful hedge fund manager ever", a math wiz kid that started trading futures and commodities in the early seventies and then left the academic world for good in 1978 to start his own fund. His personal worth is reportedly $2.5 billions.

What is important to me is that Renaissance Capital (Jim Simons' Company) methodology is based on highly sophisticated statistical techniques implemented by software and automated execution, and not to the pile of crap advertised by the thousands of trading wizards out there.
